Food allergy is a critical food safety issue, affecting between 2-3% of the population. Since often no effective cure is available, sensitive individuals must avoid food containing the allergen. A major problem is that undeclared additives are commonly found in food products on the market. This is also one of the reasons for the implementation of the EU regulation 2003/89/EG (see our Download section).

Genetic ID helps you to meet this demand by supporting your risk management with exact analysis using ELISA and PCR technology to fulfil regulatory obligations. Allergen testing can be used to verify the allergen status of a finished product or raw material, but also to determine efficient cleaning procedures for production facilities.

ID_allergene_erdnussDepending on the Allergen of interest, two different testing technologies are available:

  • ELISA (Enzyme-linked Immunosorbent Assay) is a highly sensitive, antibody based method
  • PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) is a DNA based method

Both techniques are highly specific and sensitive, however depending on the allergen of interest one of the technologies may be superior for detection or even the only one available for a particular parameter.
