The only known genetically modified flax/linseed variety, CDC Triffid (FP967), was approved from 1996 to 2001 in Canada and the USA and was tested in field trials. In 2001 commercial cultivation was discontinued.
The EU Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) reported numerous contamination incidents of products with GM flax CDC Triffid (FP967) in 2009. Because it is an unapproved GM variety in the EU, it is subject to the zero-tolerance policy.
